Facilities

The extensive, multi-temperature biorepository is housed at multiple sites within the Longwood Medical Area to maximize redundancy and emergency preparedness. Each freezer farm location operates backup freezers that are kept ready for emergency transfer of samples. All freezers are visually inspected and maintained twice per week to ensure optimal performance and sample stability.

More than 5,000 square feet of freezer farm space:

  • 140 ultra-low temperature liquid nitrogen freezers with liquid nitrogen reservoir tanks providing a continuous flow of liquid nitrogen to ensure consistent temperature and pressure in the system at all times
  • Eight -80°C mechanical freezers with LN2 back-up and emergency power sources
  • Card-access secured sites with HVAC, oxygen sensors, and emergency air evacuation systems

More than 2,000 square feet of laboratory space for personnel conducting biospecimen collection and distribution
